Foreign teachers (men, women, and couples) come to our college from many countries to teach Oral English to either first, second, or third year students. Each class meets 4 to 6 hours per week, which is a total of 18 teaching hours per week with some time spent with Free Conversation groups. Subject objectives are available upon request. Most students have been exposed to English (mainly reading and writing) in regular school as early as 12 years old.
It is important that Foreign Teachers have a teaching credential. It does not necessarily have to be in ESL or in English. The Provincial Education Department is now requiring all Foreign Teacher applicants to have 2 years teaching experience. However, a recent rule set forth by the Provincial Education Department requires that all new applicants have a TESOL or TESL certificate in order to be accepted to teach. Basic, sound teaching practices must be demonstrated and conformity to curriculum standards is advised.
Knowing the Chinese language is not necessary since only English is spoken by Foreign Teachers in their classes. However, many teachers choose to learn Chinese while in residence in China.
How To Apply To Teach At Hwa Nan
1. Send a completed application form to hnwfao@126.com. Please also send copies of your college / university diploma(s) and any language or other relevant certificates earned. Also required is a doctor's report showing the results of HIV and Syphilis tests. We can not consider any applicants without including fore mentioned material.
2. Upon receipt of the application, doctor's report and copies of diploma(s) and certificates earned, the Hwa Nan Foreign Affairs Office (FAO) Recruitment Committee will review your qualifications and contact you by email if all documents are in order. Then we will formally process your letter of invitation by sending all the material to the Provincial Education Department.
3. The formal letter of invitation will be mailed to you to use to get your work visa. You must submit this with your passport. The applicant will then receive these documents to submit with a passport and visa application, picture and fee in person to the nearest Chinese Consulate OR in the United States mail (registered) everything to a “visa service” such as:
Sunshine Travel, USA 350 5th Avenue Empire State Building, Suite 1815 NY, NY 10118
Phone: 1-212-268-6886 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 1-212-268-6886 end_of_the_skype_highlighting (Mr. Su)
BECAUSE OF SECURITY REASONS (as of May 1, 2003), NO VISA APPLICATIONS ARE ACCEPTED BY MAIL AT ANY OF THE CHINESE CONSULATES IN THE USA. The “visa service” mentioned above charges $90 for getting your visa for you. This includes the visa fee and the registered return of your passport.
4. Apply for a work visa which will be pasted in your passport. A work visa will last one year. Upon receipt of the visa, the applicant can make plans for transportation to Fuzhou, China. Most travel agencies cannot book inside mainland tickets. However, any China travel agency can arrange transportation to Shanghai, Beijing, or Hong Kong and from those locations directly to Fuzhou.
5. When you arrive at Hwa Nan, the FAO will arrange a more thorough medical examination at a well organized, clean medical clinic. It will include a chest x-ray (if you have had one recently, bring the x-ray with you and the doctor's written diagnosis of the X-ray), urine test, ultra sound of abdomen area, EKG (heart), and a general blood test.
6. As an independent, the Foreign Teacher will receive the stipend of 4,500 yuan to 5,000 each teaching month. This is in addition to free room service. Also, after finishing one school year of teaching, some travel stipend is contributed to each foreign teacher.
The economy in China is quite stable. Travel, merchandise, and food are inexpensive, therefore, 2,000 yuan can go a long way. If questions persist or further information is needed, please FAX, call, write or email us:
