I want to share some information about Morningside College and our students. Some of the statistics may be surprising. For example, I don't think many people are aware of the significance of our graduate programs in terms of enrollment and degrees granted. Overall, these facts paint the picture of a Morningside that is growing and changing to meet the needs of our students and our region.
Fall 2017 enrollment included 1,322 undergraduate and 1,466 graduate students. We conferred 272 bachelor's degrees and 375 master's degrees for the 2016-17 academic year. The four undergraduate majors with the largest enrollments are biology, nursing, business and elementary education. Our graduate program in education started more than 50 years ago and awards Master of Arts in Teaching degrees. Our newest graduate program presented the first Master of Science in Nursing degrees to 20 students this past June. Seventy-two percent of our full-time undergraduate students are from Iowa and Nebraska. Undergraduate students also come from 26 other states and Puerto Rico. We have a record number of 64 international students from 19 countries around the world. Fifty-three percent of our undergraduate students are female and 47 percent are male. Students have the opportunity to participate in 27 sports, including the newest area for intercollegiate competition: esports (video gaming). Nearly 40 percent of our fall 2017 freshman class graduated in the top 25 percent of their high school class. More than 700 students live on campus in our eight residence halls and apartment complexes. Nearly 300 students took one of our May Term courses in 2017, including 100 students who enrolled in classes that involved travel in the United States or overseas. Morningside will administer an estimated $39 million in financial aid to all students during the 2017-18 academic year.
