Ming Opera Breaking of the Silver Zither Staged in Hwa Nan

On the afternoon of Nov. 12, Ming opera Breaking of the Silver Zither was acted on the stage in the college auditorium by Fuzhou Ming Opera Art Heritage Development Centre, attracting more than 500 faculty and students.  It is a special performance staged for college students as a part of the national project of bringing high art into the campus.

Breaking of the Silver Zither tells the story of Lin Xu, one of the Six Gentlemen in the Reform Movement of 1898, and his wife, advocating unyielding, fighting and patriotic spirit, and traditional virtues of marital harmony and the couple’s mutual help and relief in time of poverty.  In 2017, the opera received National Endowment for the Arts.  The premiere of the opera in September this year was well received by the public.  The artists’ wonderful performance and beautiful stage and lighting drew forth prolonged applause from the audience.

Adhering to the principles of “coming closer to art, experiencing the classics, uplifting the mind and the spirit, expanding the ideological realm”, College Youth League organized this activity to improve student cultural and artistic literacy and to promote healthy development of students.  The special performance of Ming opera enriched the campus culture and provided opportunity for students to experience the charm of culture and promote the traditional Chinese culture.
