Hwa Nan welcome China field study program faculty and students from the University of Puget Sound

 

From January 4 to January 16, China field study program of the University of Puget Sound made its first trip to Fuzhou and Hwa Nan.  Visitors include China expert Dr. Karl Field and his wife, former Hwa Nan teacher and graduate of University of Puget Sound Lisa Long and ten other students.  Hwa Nan teachers and students warmly welcomed them at the airport and accompanied them visiting the old and new campus of Hwa Nan, experiencing customs and culture of Fuzhou, learning simplified Chinese characters, touring Three Lanes and Seven Alleys, Lin Zexu Memorial, Temple of Confucius, Spouting Fountain Temple on top of Drum Mountain, Mawei Pagoda Anchorage, China Chuangzheng Culture Museum, the American Consulate building, which is helpful to their study of China.  With respective research topics in mind, students made field trips to the site of Gutian Congress, Tulou (earthen buildings)in Yongding County of Longyan City, South Putuo Temple in Xiamen, Qingjing Mosque in Quanzhou(Ashab Mosque) and Meizhou Isaland in Putian.  During the field trips, Dr. Karl Field gave students instructions on topics of Taoism, Legalism, Buddhism, Confucianism, China’s century of humiliation, Chinese nationalism, Mao Zedong's communist revolution, Deng Xiaoping's "Reform and Opening up", Xi Jinping’s “Belt and Road initiative” and Chinese Dream.  The study tour greatly impressed students and faculty and they wished to make another visit.
