Deanna Yeo Tan (1928- January 10, 2013) 杨淑月

 

Deanna Yeo Tan (1928- January 10, 2013) was born in Zhangzhou, Fujian.  She graduated with B.A. in Education from Hwa Nan College in 1951 and taught music to Junior High school students in Singapore after graduation.   She came to the US in September, 1955 as a visiting teacher under the Fullbright Exchange Teachers Program.  In Jan. 1956, she attended Wesleyan University, Lincoln, Nebraskaon scholarship (recommended by Dr. Doris Hsu) and graduated with B. A. in music in June, 1957.  In Sept. 1957, she attended University of Buffalo, N.Y. and graduated with M.A. in Music in June 1959.  Deanna was a certified piano and voice teacher by MTNA, a certified music teacher for the public schools by New York State Education Department of New York.  She provided private voice and piano lessons for more than 60 years, a sincere, friendly excellent teacher who was loved by all her students.  Deanna Yeo was active on stage, giving voice recitals for churches and schools, singing the leading roles in Madame Butterfly and Hansel and Gretel, and making radio and TV appearances.  In 1958, she performed Cho-Cho-San in Madame Butterfly with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.  In 1961, she sang soprano for United Nations Concert at Brooklyn Museum.  In Dec.1979, she acted solo in Handel's Judas Maccabaeus presented by the Monmouth Civic Chorus.  She was a cheerful, faithful Junior Choir and Senior Choir director for 23 years at Jireh Church, NJ before she retired in 2009.  Deanna Yeo was hardworking, always eager to serve others, and thrifty in her own living but generous in giving for the benefit of others.  She passed away in 2013 and left bequests of her and her husband’s to their alma maters.  A gift of 356,897 USD was given to Fujian Hwa Nan Women’s College.  To commemorate her, the college #2 Lab building is named after Deanna Yeo.  57,883USD was donated to College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Xiamen University for Chee-Teck and Yeo Tan Scholarship.  Chee-Teck and Yeo Tan Food Science Graduate Fellowship in the range of $700,000 was endowed in Department of Food Science, University of Massachusetts to support students from Xiamen University to obtain PhD.
