Sa Benmao (萨本茂)

Sa Benmao, an ethic Mongolian and an Applied Chemistry Scientist, was born in Fuzhou to a naval family in 1924.  She is one of the 18th generation descendants of Sa Family moving into Fujian and her ancestors include Sa Zhenbing, a prominent admiral navy veteran of the late Qing Dynasty, Sa Bendong, Former President of National Xiamen University and Sa Shijun, Zhongshan Ship Captain.  The ancestors’ dream of building a strong China has a profound influence on her.  After graduating from Chemistry Department of Hwa Nan College in 1950, Sa Benmao devoted herself to the research and practice of applied chemistry in Navy ship maintenance for more than thirty years.  She has successfully completed sixty-seven scientific research and technology innovations with her colleagues, making outstanding contributions to the ship science research of People’s Republic of China. Therefore she is honored as Heroine Like Madame Curie for People’s Navy.  Three of her research achievements on acetylene detergent yellow powder, tail shaft FRP coating and activated carbon filler for acetylene cylinders won Major Science and Technology Achievement Awards at the first National Science Conference in 1978, all of which filled domestic research gap and two of which surpassed the leading level in the world.  In 1980s, she optimized the production process and successfully trial-produced gapless filler acetylene cylinders, which again reached international advanced level.  In 1983, Type 82 Carbon Cleaning Agent she developed received the 3rd Prize of Military Science Research Achievement Award. Indium Brush Plating and Aluminum Tin Alloy Solution won Shanghai Women’s First Prize in 1986.  Indium Brush Plating Solution won Silver Medal in the 3rd China Invention Exhibition, 1987. Wear Resistant Soft Brush Plating won the second prize of Military Science and Technology Progress Award in 1988.  Her research papers and achievements play important roles in modernization of China navy and economic construction of China.  From the year of 1978, she received over thirty different honors from the national government, military and Shanghai city.  After retiring from Professor and Senior Engineer position in 1989, Sa Benmao continued to make contributions to the society by co-writing professional books, devising formula for chemical industry, supporting youth science and technology education, mentoring science and technology activities for teenagers, subsidizing impoverished students, caring for the elderly without family support, and taking various posts in social organizations for women, children and minority groups.  Since new Hwa Nan College was reestablished, Sa Benmao has paid many visits to the college, encouraging alumnae, teachers and students to work solidly, to face challenges bravely, to make innovations and to fulfill dreams. To support college development and needy students, she has already made donations of more than 300,000RMB.
